babies babies

so i realized that i haven't posted pictures of the twins in a while. here are some for your viewing pleasure.

:)

pictures from the hospital

i love this picture because reagan is cuddling her blanket.

austin holding his pacifier in.

this picture doesn't quite capture what was going on. reagan was practically lying on top of austin and it was so cute! she really loves her brother.

coming home!! they look so tiny in their carseats.

pictures from home

famous first bath pictures (though i must admit they aren't the best.)

doing what they do best...though they're better at it during the day than at night! ;)

funny story about these two...

we have them sleeping in the same crib right now and they are hilarious together. if you ever need a good laugh, come and sit in our nursery at night. these two grunt and groan and toot for a good part of the night. they're also getting pretty wiggly. we leave considerable space in between them when they're sleeping, but the other day tyler found reagan with her head butted up against austin, and he was trying to suck on it like a pacifier! so cute.

sweet dreams

here are some cute pictures of our kiddos doing what they do best: sleep!

i'm a jealous momma that they get to sleep so much. i think i will be sleeping anytime they are once they're home!

everyday sleepin'. the pink and green things you see are fake hands, if you will. they're essentially rice socks sewn into the shape of hands. don't worry - they don't get heated up, but the babes like the weight or the "feel" of someone's hand resting on them (such as the green one over austin). the nurses also use them to keep them separated (like the pink one is doing).
double trouble. it's actually kind of hard to hold both babes at once, especially since they're getting bigger (6lbs each). here tyler masters the art of the double hold quite well. luckily both babies are sleeping, which makes it easier. :) austin is on the left, reagan on the right.

my all time fav. this picture is too cute. i think they'll be embarrassed by this one when they're older. hahaha. (reagan on the left, austin on the right.)
daydreaming. this one is worth enlarging so you can see austin (click on the picture to do so). he has both hands up by his face and looks so peaceful - it must have been a good dream!

practicing for when she's rich and famous. reagan says, "leave me alone momma paparazzi! i'm trying to sleep."

and once again austin. he is our funny little man. he makes pretty good faces and sleeps with his hands in the strangest places, like so:

we can't get over how cute these guys are - and how different they are! austin definitely looks like his daddy, while reagan looks like her momma. austin is very easy going and reagan sure lets you know when she's unhappy. but both are perfect in every way and we love them so much!

introducing...

Austin Tyler

and Reagan Wilke

These little ones decided to join our family early! They just couldn't stay away from the fun. :)

Tyler and I were watching Cowboys and Aliens on Friday night (the 6th) when my water suddenly broke. I wasn't sure if that's what had really happened, so we went to the hospital to get checked out. Sure enough, my water had broken. The nurse told us that we wouldn't be leaving the hospital until the babies were born! Quite a shock to us - I was only 33 weeks pregnant. I didn't even have a hospital bag packed yet. Poor Tyler made two or three trips home that night. :)

My doctors/nurses did everything they could to stop my labor, but the medications only slowed its progress. They were hoping to keep me pregnant until 34 weeks (when the babes' lungs would be better developed), but our kiddos wouldn't hear of it! They came so fast that I only had time for one steroid shot (to help their lungs develop faster. Two doses is protocol). We were admitted to the hospital about 10:30pm Friday and they were born Saturday by c-section at 10:40am (Austin) and 10:42am (Reagan).

It was Austin's water that broke, which makes sense - he was Baby A and the farthest down. And as my luck would have it, his water broke about an hour after I took my Lovenox (my blood thinner). See, the problem with Lovenox is that I can't have an epidural while on it - and I had originally been told that I had to wait 24 hours for an epidural so the Lovenox could leave my system. Thankfully, the anesthesiologist did some research and my dose of Lovenox was low enough that I only had to wait 12 hours. I was so grateful for this. If I had to wait 24 hours these babes would have come while I was under general anesthesia - a thought I did NOT like.

I labored for 12 hours without an epidural. All I had during that time was medications to slow my contractions. Generally speaking they helped reduce pain, but not quite all of it. :) Suffice it to say that I was grateful for my epidural when it came! Once I had my epidural, they wasted no time getting me into surgery. (I think I was dilated to a 7 or so at this point and had been progressing at one centimeter an hour.) The surgery itself was just fine - but I did NOT like being numb up to my ribcage. It's a strange feeling not being able to clear your throat or cough. Epidurals also make me shake violently (I shook before and during the c-section and probably for 3-4 hours afterwards), but all in all totally worth it.

And this was our end result:
Two peas in a pod! (Reagan is always on the left and Austin is always on the right.) Austin was 4lbs 12oz and Reagan was 4lbs 9oz - quite a bit different from the estimate the perinatologist had given us earlier that week.

These sweet babes are adorable! One of the nurses told us that Austin is very caring; he likes to snuggle with his sister or will put a hand on her when she starts to cry.

Holding hands. My heart melted when I saw this.
Tanning. Austin likes to sleep with his arms up - something he gets from his daddy. Luckily both babies are off the bilirubin lights at this point. Neither of them likes the eye covers and would rather be swaddled.

Both babes are still in the NICU but doing well. Both had assistance breathing after birth but were taken off their ventilators/CPAP by that evening, which is amazing for their age. They've gone through "tanning sessions" to help with their bilirubin and are being fed via the orange tubes you can see going into their noses.

The big factor keeping them from coming home is eating. Because of their young age, they can't coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing. We're currently working on that and as soon as they master eating, they can come home!! This process can take weeks, depending on how well the babes do.

Thanks to everyone for your support, thoughts, and prayers. Keep them coming our way so that our little ones can be healthy, strong, and come home soon!

anatomy of a 32.5 week twin pregnancy

i thought i'd spice up my traditional belly shot with some fun facts about my pregnancy.
that's right people - our little girl is 5lb 7oz and our little boy is 4lb 12oz for a total of 10lb 3oz of baby. yes, my back is sore and my feet hurt if i stand too long. :) the girl is two weeks ahead according to weight, and the boy is one week ahead.

holy cow

i about fell out of my chair when the ultrasound tech told us that the girl is 5lb 7oz. that's huge! and i was 32.5 weeks at the time of that ultrasound!! the specialist said it looks like i'll be having twins at least over 7lbs each and my OB joked that they're going to be over 9lbs. let's hope not for my sake. hahaha. but on the bright side, the specialist said that if they were to come tomorrow, they'd do well because they're good sized.

at my visit with my OB this morning, she told me that i'm measuring 40cm, or 40 weeks. this is the size that everyone else (with singleton babies) gets to finish at. i still have 5 more weeks until full term (at 38 weeks with twins). i'd have 7 more weeks if i was going to 40 weeks! i'm kind of bummed - i made it this far with absolutely no stretch marks on my stomach and in just the last few days they've started to surface. i guess it's comforting to know i wouldn't have had any with one baby! :)

other fun happenings:
- i've hit the 50lbs gained mark. no comment on that. i'll let you think what you'd like. :)
- the boy (baby a) is still head down and the girl (baby b) is still bum down. the specialist thinks it's very unlikely that they'll turn at this point. less than a 10% chance, she said. because i don't want a sore bum and a sore tummy (one vaginal delivery and one c-section delivery), it's looking more and more like i'll be having a c-section. i'm very okay with this.
- i had my first non-stress test this week. nothing too exciting to share. we all passed, although the boy didn't like all the sensors poking into him. his heartbeat was over 180bpm for a good portion of my NST.
- babies are expensive. i know i'm preaching to the choir here, but still. tyler and i have dropped a serious amount of dough in the last week and a half getting everything we need for these two. and we're not done.
- i had my baby shower! my wonderful sister, karen, and sister-in-law, leslie, threw one for me. two peas in a pod. see karen's blog for pictures.
- i'm nervous for the boy to get bigger. don't get me wrong - i want him to - but with the way he's positioned, my ribs are VERY sore. they used to hurt only when i coughed or sneezed, but lately they've been sore all the time. and i have to be careful about how i move or owie!

all right, enough for one post. tyler wants me to make sure i tell you all that i'm happy and excited for the babies to come. probably more than he knows.
