Good News Monday

Today has been a good day for Tyler for two huge reasons:

1) He was accepted to the Santa Clara University School of Law! We're not sure yet where he's actually going to go for law school, but it was his first official acceptance letter, so it was rather exciting. The idea that we might end up hereis also pretty awesome. We expect that we'll hear from all of the schools he applied to within the next few months.

2) He got his latest LSAT score back: 167. That's the 95th percentile. Congratulations Tyler! We were really excited to get that score back. That score opens up a lot more doors, both in scholarships and possible schools he could apply to. He's thinking about applying to some more schools to widen his options. Harvard or Stanford, anyone?

I'm so proud of Tyler and I'm excited to see what the future holds for us!

I Love to See the Temple

As I've tried to "collect" "artwork" for my current house (and very distant future house), I've found myself gravitating towards LDS pictures. As it turns out, the two pictures I've collected thus far are both pictures of temples!

Tyler and I bought this SLC Temple picture back on the 4th of July at the bizarre held at the old Utah County courthouse grounds. I love it! I think it's such an interesting picture. Word has it that the picture is not "doctored" (e.g. the flags were really there when the picture was taken), so I think it makes it that much more cool. We're still trying to figure out where to hang it.

For Christmas, David and Denise got me this picture of the Sacramento Temple - the temple where Tyler and I were married. I love the picture and I know exactly where it's going in my house. I think this old "antique" style of the picture is really awesome. Thanks for the picture!

Merry Christmas!

For Christmas, Tyler got a new SLR digital camera. He was really excited to get it, and he's been having fun learning how to use it.

Here are some random pictures we took with it on Christmas day.

Tyler reading up on his new camera (and his new Y hunting hat).

Ma and Pa Jeffs playing Guitar Hero, which their kids gave them for Christmas.

The adorable Emily.

We had a wonderful Christmas and we hope all of you did too!

Finally

For those of you who were wanting to see a picture of Tyler and me from Halloween, you finally get your chance. Someone from the ward emailed a picture of us in our lovely costumes. Happy Halloween...after Thanksgiving!!

Elf and his "sugar."

Now onto Christmas.

Gingerbread Houses and Climbing

GINGERBREAD HOUSES
On Saturday, Leslie got us "Jeffs" girls together to decorate gingerbread houses. It was a lot of fun! The best part about mine was that I didn't have to put it together; it came assembled. I just got to decorate the outside! Here are some pictures of mine:

Front - Santa at the door way. (I didn't have a chimney to put him next to/in.)

Side #1

Back - The blue thing is supposed to be a planter box. I couldn't think of what to put there. :)

Side #2 - Looks a lot like side #1.

CLIMBING
Tonight for FHE, Tyler and I went rock climbing at The Quarry with a couple from our ward . I must admit, I was a little nervous beforehand, but we had a really great time. We climbed "top rope," but The Quarry also offers "lead climb," "crack," and "boulder" climbing. Tyler was pretty darn good - he even finished a 5-9 climb! I stuck to the easy stuff and barely finished a 5-5. :) We had so much fun that we plan to go back sometime soon. Here's a picture of top rope climbing:

Measured Voices Provide Reason, Support Amidst Proposition 8 Reaction

This is from newsroom.lds.org.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Following the passing of Proposition 8 in California, the Church released statements urging civility and reaffirming its position on the issue. The Church also noted that two Roman Catholic bishops released statements decrying religious bigotry against Mormons. The Church today points to additional third-party voices that provide useful insights into the reaction following the vote. Some of these individuals supported Proposition 8, and some were against it.

These materials may be helpful to the news media, bloggers, Church members and the general public in gaining a broader view of the aftermath of the Proposition 8 vote. All people of faith have cause for concern when others try to remove their legitimate voice from the public square.

Anti-Defamation League Condemns Criminal Activity Targeting Religious Institutions That Supported Proposition 8

"Although we strongly opposed Proposition 8, its passage does not justify the defacement and destruction of property. We urge Californians to channel their frustration and disappointment in productive and responsible ways to work towards full equality for all Americans. To place anyone in fear of threat to their houses of worship or their personal security because they have expressed deeply held religious views is contrary to everything this nation represents. Our Constitution's First Amendment protects freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion for all of us."

Dallas Morning News Editorial: Protest and Civility in a Democracy

“But a vicious minority is not satisfied with that. Some gay rights protesters have voiced sentiments about Mormons, whose church was active in advocating Prop 8's passage, that if said about gays would be condemned as hate speech. Vandals have struck a number of Mormon temples. Bash Back, a pro-gay group in Olympia, Wash., trashed a Mormon temple there, then issued a statement saying, ‘Let this be a warning to the Mormon church: Dissolve completely or be destroyed.’

“Gay rights extremists should ask themselves the same question. A cause, no matter how just, can only be harmed by thuggish tactics. Our pluralist democracy depends on a citizenry committed to working out differences with civility.”

Michael Barber, Professor of Theology, Scripture & Christian Thought at John Paul the Great Catholic University

“… we found it appalling that in the final days of the campaign, opponents of Proposition 8 ran an ad in which Mormon missionaries were presented as barging into a same-sex couple’s home, gleefully rummaging through their personal possessions and violating their rights. The ad attempted to ridicule people of the Mormon faith, even implying that it was wrong that they contributed money to the election. As a Catholic school, we stand beside our friends in the Mormon Church and of people of faith who work tirelessly to preserve the freedom of religion in America. We also strongly oppose any attempt to ridicule another person’s faith, even faiths with which we have strong historical and theological disagreements.”

The First Amendment Center — Charles Haynes: When the Marriage Debate Turns Ugly, No One Wins

“Mormons are taking the biggest hit from the opposition. But as protests, boycotts and blacklists targeting Mormons proliferate, it’s worth pausing to think about where this collision is headed. … Before this clash escalates further, both sides should exercise caution and reconsider their battle plans going forward.”

The Christian Post — Chuck Colson: So Much for Tolerance

“Two days after the election, 2,000 homosexual protesters surrounded a Mormon temple in Los Angeles chanting ‘Mormon scum.’ Protesters picketed Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, holding signs reading ‘Purpose-Driven Hate.’ Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills was spray painted. Church members’ cars have been vandalized, and at least two Christians were assaulted. Protesters even hurled racial epithets at African-Americans because African-Americans voted overwhelmingly in favor of traditional marriage. What hypocrisy from those who spend all of their time preaching tolerance to the rest of us!”

Beliefnet.com — Rod Dreher: Stand By the Mormons

“Now is the time for traditional Christians — Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox — to come to the aid of our Mormon friends. They put themselves on the front line of the traditional marriage battle like no other church group. And now individual Mormons are paying a terrible price for standing up for something we all believe in. I don't know how we can stand with them from afar, but at least we can thank them, and speak out when we see them being abused. We might also think again about how we view them. … I have deep disagreements with Mormon theology. But they are our friends and allies and fellow citizens, and they deserve our thanks and support.”

John Mark Reynolds, Philosophy Professor at Biola University – California and Thank-a-Mormon Day

“In the battle for the family, however, traditional Christians have no better friends than the Mormon faithful. It would be wrong if that support were taken for granted. We are intolerant of the false attacks on Mormon faith and family. We stand with our Mormon friends in their right to express their views on the public square. We celebrate the areas, such as family values, where we agree. A heart felt thank you may not win points from other friends who demand one hundred percent agreement from their allies, but it is the decent and proper thing to do. Thank you to our Mormon friends and allies!”

The Volokh Conspiracy — Dale Carpenter: An Alternative to Anti-Mormon Protests

“Here's my advice to righteously furious gay-marriage supporters: Stop the focus on the Mormon Church. Stop it now. We just lost a ballot fight in which we were falsely but effectively portrayed as attacking religion. So now some of us attack a religion? People were warned that churches would lose their tax-exempt status, which was untrue. So now we have (frivolous) calls for the Mormon Church to lose its tax-exempt status? It's rather selective indignation, anyway, since lots of demographic groups gave us Prop 8 in different ways — some with money and others with votes. I understand the frustration, but this particular expression of it is wrong and counter-productive.”

Utah Jazz

Yesterday, Tyler and I went to go to the Jazz v. Bucks game with my dad and brother. It was a great game and a lot of fun! The best part of the whole thing was that we got to sit in the 10th row. Tenth row! It was awesome to sit so close to the action. It was a first for Tyler, so it was fun to share it with him. Here's a picture of Tyler and me before the game, taken with my dad's phone since we forgot our camera:

The other cool thing about going to this particular game was that they honored Jerry Sloan for achieving his 1000th win as the head coach of the Utah Jazz. He surpassed this mark back on November 7th when the Jazz beat the Oklahoma City Thunder (formerly the Seattle SuperSonics). He holds the record for most wins with the same team, and is in the top five for most wins by a coach in the history of the NBA. Pretty cool!

Unfortunately I don't have a picture to post here, but Tyler caught one of the "prizes" they threw out to the crowd during the game. It's just a small, stuffed basketball advertising gasoline or something. If you care to see it, stand by Tyler when he's getting a call from me; he took a picture of me with it on his phone and was going to set it to show up when I call.

Thanks for taking us to the game, dad!

Celebrations!

Tyler and I have had two reasons to celebrate lately.

1. I got the scholarship! After weeks of waiting to find out if I had been awarded the scholarship I applied for back in May, I finally got notification in the mail on Friday. Woot! It isn't nearly big enough to cover all of the costs I will be having soon (*cough*boards*cough*school*cough*), but it surely will help to alleviate some financial stress.

2. Robin got married yesterday! It was fun to go to the sealing and then the reception afterwards. Although Tyler and I had our camera, we didn't get any pictures of Robin and Clay. Most of the pictures on our camera are of my immediate family, or pictures that the little kids took. Here's a sampler:

The picture is kind of dark, but here's my fam:

My fam again:

Poor Karen was the only one in the family that couldn't go into the sealing. Oh well, she got to play with the kids! Here we have Hyrum, Karen, Dallin, Echo, and Kirsten.

Dallin was pretty tired by the time the reception rolled around. I don't blame him - I don't think he got any of his naps (understandably).

Robin and Clay are now off to Hawaii! I wish I was somewhere tropical instead of going to school tomorrow...

Purging

The joke going around my parent's house as they move from one place to another in Draper is that they need to "purge." They have an awful lot of stuff, as you can probably imagine, seeing as they've been married for almost 27 years (scary!). Yesterday, I was doing the dishes when I decided to see what Tyler was doing. He was in our bedroom, "purging" his clothes! I thought it was a great idea, so I joined in on the fun (if you will). We both got rid of a good amount of clothes, although the picture doesn't really do the pile justice.

Like I said, the pile looks small, but when you don't have too much in the first place, it's pretty substantial. And to finally get rid of some older clothes was a great feeling. We have more closet and dresser space now! We plan to take this stuff to DI tomorrow.

:)

I did it!

Today, folks, is the first time that I have ever voted...at a voting location. Sure, I've voted by absentee ballet in the past when I was at BYU and still registered in California, but today is the first time I went to my designated voting place and cast my vote. Exciting, huh? Tyler went with me and it was great. Woot!

Soapboxes

Since I've been studying pretty much all morning, I thought I'd take a break and post something since it's been a while. Studying is so frustrating and I need the break!!

...I suppose "soapboxes" is a harsher term than I'd prefer to use for this blog post title, but I don't know any synonyms and I'm too lazy to look. (And yes, I know I'm online and it's quite easy to do so...) So the blog post title shall remain as such.

1) Happy Halloween! I love Halloween and I'm so excited that today is the day! I love candy - more particularly chocolate. I love dressing up and seeing little kids in cute costumes. Tyler and I are getting all dressed up and going to a ward Halloween party this evening. It should be fun! I also love Halloween because, as Dr. Veit put it, it signals the start of a great holiday season. First Halloween, next Thanksgiving, then Christmas and New Years! I love this time of the year, minus the weather. Plus, it means that the semester is almost over, which is always a happy thing to think about.

2) I am a believer that drugs can kill you...figuratively. Don't get me wrong, I come from a very medical family and I do believe in the power of drugs, but studying for my pharmacology test has just about killed me. Don't believe me? I'll let you borrow my pharm book sometime and you can see for yourself. I'm currently trying to memorize a plethora of cardiac drugs, in addition to anti-infectives, anti-virals, anti-fungals, local anesthetics, and general anesthetics, just to name a few. It's studying for this test that is making me so frustrated and led me to write this post. Just ask Tyler how frustrated it is making me!

3) Tyler's mom gave me the Scrubbing Bubbles tub/shower cleaner - and let me tell you, it works wonders. I'm very convinced that the bath tub in my house is the original one from the 1920s (okay, probably not) and cleaning it is a beast. It collects dirt like no bath tub I've ever seen before, and the Scrubbing Bubbles pad cleaned it fantastically - better than Scrubbing Bubbles spray alone. I recommend it!

4) I think it's funny that the media uses statistical reasoning to support Obama, yet doesn't do the same for McCain. For example, they're discrediting McCain's gain in the polls as "statistical noise," which is likely, but doesn't that mean that Obama's previous leads are affected by the same "noise" - meaning his leads aren't as great as they claim? It's been a while since I studied statistics, so pardon my efforts to talk about this, but it sure is obvious that the media is heavily biased towards the Democrats. That's why I think this election will be interesting. The media may be Democratic, but that doesn't mean everyone is. (Another "hanging chad" election, perhaps?) It's an unfortunate, though, because the media has a very strong influence over its audience, and when Democratic issues are given more broadcast time, it can unfairly bias voters. (http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003875230)

5) I am a supporter of Proposition 8. I understand that most of you reading this blog probably have the same beliefs I have about homosexual marriage, but I think it's important to write about the issue all the same. I do not think that marriage between a man and a man or a woman and a woman should be recognized by the government, especially when (in California) a homosexual couple already has all the same rights and privileges as a legally married couple. All they are fighting for in this proposition is a status, and unfortunately, most people don't understand how this status change will lead to a deterioration of society. Some argue that we're withholding a civil right in this issue, but consider what has happened in Massachusetts, the only other state to legalize homosexual marriage. Schools are now permitted to teach homosexuality. Teachers are not required to send home advance notice of this teaching, nor are parents allowed to take their children out of class when it is being taught. What does this leave parents to do? Nothing - they can't do anything (unless, I suppose, they home school). With this issue, we're asked to be "tolerant," but at what cost? There is nothing to be gained by legally recognizing homosexual marriage, but so much to lose if this proposition fails. Please talk to friends and family in California and explain to the the importance of supporting this proposition. For more information, go to protectmarriage.com.

6) I am waiting to hear back on a scholarship. Today is the last day that all applicants were to be notified of the results, but I haven't heard anything and that makes me nervous! My licensing boards are coming up next semester, and they are nothing short of about $1200 in total. That's on top of tuition and fees of over $5000, in addition to "living costs." Let's hope I hear about the scholarship soon - and let's hope I receive one!!

Well, that's all for now, folks. Have a very Happy Halloween!!

:)

(Before) and After

This summer, Tyler and I have been trying to fix up our house a little bit. Most of this fixing-up has occurred on the outside. (I guess the inside will have to wait until it's too cold to go out.) I've been meaning to put some pictures up, but haven't gotten around to it until now. Unfortunately, I don't have any "before" pictures, so you'll have to rely on my description of how the outside of the house looked before.

Before: a planter box filled with dry, yucky dirt.
After: a planter box full of great soil and pretty flowers!

Before: lots of weeds, rocks, concrete, tree trunks/roots, more weeds.
After: bushes! Tyler pulled the old tree trunks/roots out with his truck and put the sprinkler system in himself. We plan to either plant grass or a garden behind the last of the bushes.

Here's the whole house. You probably can't tell, but we planted flowers underneath the pine tree on the left. The grass was also...not as alive-looking as it is now. And Tyler did a fantastic job of trimming back the pine tree. It was getting a little overbearing.

Up next: painting the back door, painting the trim around the house?, painting the kitchen, planting grass/a garden.

Kids in Church

I got this from Janny, Tyler's grandma, and I thought it was pretty funny!

KIDS IN CHURCH

3 year old Reese:
"Our Father, who does art in heaven, Harold is His name. Amen."

A little boy was overheard praying:
"Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am."

After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I want to stay with you guys."

One particular 4 year old prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets."

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping."

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5, and Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw an opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake; I can wait.'" Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!"

A father was at the beach with his children when the 4 year old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. "Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked. "He died and went to heaven," the dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then asked, "Why did God throw him back down?"

A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their 6 year old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?" "I wouldn't know what to say," replied the girl. "Just say what you hear mommy say," the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?"

Birthday Fun

On Saturday, I turned the big 2-3 (although a few of my family members thought it was the big 2-4. Noooot quite. You'd all have to be year older for that to be true.) To celebrate, Tyler and I decided to start the day by hiking to the hot springs up Spanish Fork Canyon. Here are some pictures from the hike. Because I am the "family photographer," as Tyler puts it, I'm not in many of the pictures. The only picture that I am in isn't very good, so I'm not going to post it. :)

Here is Tyler at the hot springs.

The waterfall (and a, thankfully, not-nude bather).

"Is this the right place?" Tyler checking his GPS. Note the stellar masonry work in the background. It makes for some nice "hot springing." (P.S. We weren't really lost.)

On this hike, I learned how the earth passes gas: through hot springs. They stunk SO bad - compliments to the sulfur. Tyler and I had planned on getting in, but were immediately turned off by the putrid smell. In this picture, I caught the earth passing gas. I hope she's not embarrassed.

On Saturday afternoon, Tyler and I went to a Jeffs & Jeffs work party at Rob and Tracy's house. It was a lot of fun, and the food was fantastic! We had some of the halibut that the Jeffs boys brought back from Alaska. Mmmm.

After the work party, Tyler surprised me by taking me back to his parents' house for a surprise birthday party. Miri and Mike, Sami and Mark, and Katie and Joey all showed up for the surprise. We had some delicious Coldstone cake and then played Wii late into the night. Tyler did a great job putting the surprise together. :)

On Sunday, Tyler and I went up to my parents' house for halibut tacos and some more Coldstone ice cream. We then spent the evening watching the Olympics. Go USA!

Overall, it was a fun birthday! Now if only the birthdays could stop here...

What's in a name?

I saw this on Leslie's blog, and I thought it was so cool that I had to do it myself!

What Christine Means

You are very open. You communicate well, and you connect with other people easily.

You are a naturally creative person. Ideas just flow from your mind.

A true chameleon, you are many things at different points in your life. You are very adaptable.

You are truly an original person. You have amazing ideas, and the power to carry them out.

Success comes rather easily for you... especially in business and academia.

Some people find you to be selfish and a bit overbearing. You're a strong person.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.

You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.

You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are the total package - suave, sexy, smart, and strong.

You have the whole world under your spell, and you can influence almost everyone you know.

You don't always resist your urges to crush the weak. Just remember, they don't have as much going for them as you do.

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless - and you have a lot of questions about life.

You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You're most comfortable when you're far away from home.

You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.

You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.

You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.

You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.

At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

You may miss out by not settling down, but you're too busy having fun to care.

You are relaxed, chill, and very likely to go with the flow.

Well adjusted and incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is.

One Year Anniversary

Tyler and I celebrated our one year anniversary on July 14. I can't believe how time flies! It's incredible to me that it's already been on year. Many more great years to come.

We didn't end up celebrating on our actual anniversary (we were busy out working in the yard), but we did make up for it by going to PF Changs and seeing Get Smart during the week. We have plans to (hopefully) do something a little more fun once school starts and our lives resume a more normal schedule.

To reminisce of that wonderful day, I've included some pictures:

Everyone at the temple ceremony. We were married at the Sacramento California Temple. The Jeffs' side had a better showing at the temple that day. They're on the left side of us. :)

The Jeffs family at the temple. Geez the nieces and nephews have grown!

The Weidmer family at the temple. We missed Kevin that day.

Wedding party plus the Jeffs and the Weidmers. Funny to think that Ashley (two left from me) was single at that time and is now married, living beneath me, and pregnant! :)

Happy Anniversary to us!!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

The time has finally come for me to read the seventh Harry Potter! I know that this book has been out for a while (over a year), but I haven't read it yet. I decided that before I read it, I had to read the first six to refresh my memory to the things of Harry Potter. I started with the first book back in May, and I finished the sixth book this morning. Now I'm sufficiently prepped for this last book. I'm excited to read what happens!!

5k Number Three

Well, I did it again - I ran my third 5k of the summer. This 5k was a fundraiser for the Best Buddies Utah organization in hopes of bringing chapters of Best Buddies to Utah county high schools. (For more information on what Best Buddies is all about, go to bestbuddiesutah.org.)

The race took place at Mountain View high school in Orem. The course was great because it was relatively flat for the entire 3.1 miles, but somewhat disappointing because they had us run two laps towards the end of the race - something that is not necessarily exciting when it comes to running. (But who am I to say? I do all of my running on the treadmill!)

I ran the race with girls from work: Aubrey, Katie, Jessica, and Jenny. Katie's husband, Joey, ran with us too. They all did so great! And it was fun to get out and run with them. Afterwards, we floated the Provo River to celebrate and relax.

And now, for the exciting part: I ran this 5k a minute and a half faster than my last one! My time was 27:20, a 1:31 improvement over my second 5k, and a 2:10 improvement over my first 5k. I was shocked with my time (especially since I averaged a pace of less than a 9 minute mile), but I was also very pleased. As usual, my goal for the next 5k I run in will be to beat my previous time.

But we'll have to wait until August to see if that happens!

New Link: Frugal is Fab!

Seeing as there's not too much to do while playing receptionist, I've been blog surfing, if you will. I came across a "frugal" blog that a stay-at-home mom is doing, and I think it's fantastic! This blog is actually maintained by the sister of someone who was in my singles ward at Glenwood. I hope she doesn't mind that I added the link to my blog.

:)

Happy money saving!

Summertime

Now that Tyler is done with his LSAT class and has taken his test, we've started to have some fun this summer! This past weekend we made up for the first few months we missed out on because Tyler was studying so diligently. (We find out how well Tyler did on his LSAT next week!)

:)

Last Wednesday, Tyler and I went up to my parent's house to spend some time with them. Tyler went biking with Kevin while I went running and spent some time with my mom and sister. We then enjoyed dinner with all of my family.

Last Thursday, Tyler went biking with Greg (I can't remember where) while I hiked the Y with some girls from work - Jessica, Katie, Aubrey, and Jenny. I took my camera with me, but didn't end up taking any pictures. I'll have to see if I can't get some from Jenny. It was fun, and the view is beautiful up there.

On Saturday morning, Tyler woke up really early to start working on our house. We've had plans to fix up our house for some time now, so we decided we better get started. Tyler trimmed back the pine tree over our house, pulled out old bushes and trees with his truck, and dug a hole under the walkway so that we can get water to the other side of the house and plant some bushes there. I mowed the lawn and pulled weeds (after I woke up). We then took all of our clippings to the green waste in Provo.

On Saturday afternoon, we went boating with Tyler's parents and his sister Andi's family at Yuba Lake - about an hour south of Provo on I-15. I had never been there before, but it was a lot of fun. We wakeboarded and tubed all afternoon - although I'm not very good at either. (For pictures of us boating, go to the Hadlocks or Ma and Pa blog, as listed on my sidebar.)

On Sunday, we went to my parent's house to celebrate my dad's 49th birthday. We celebrated with a traditional ice cream cake from Basket Robbins and had steaks for dinner.

On Monday, the house-fixing-up-plans continued with more cleaning up and more digging. We even made a trip to Home Depot to check out sprinkler stuff and to get an idea of what kind of flowers and shrubs we want to plant. Later that night, we helped Tyler's parents take the boat back to storage and Andi's swing to her house.

So far, our summer has been pretty good. Too bad school starts in less than two months!

Swamp Cooler: Final Update

We fixed our swamp cooler (much sooner than the one week deadline that I predicted), and holy cow does it work. Our house went from being 84 degrees to 68 degrees. It's fantastic! In fact, it's almost too cold - but we're definitely not complaining. Now we can stay home and enjoy our house on hot summer days!

P.S.

Just to give you an idea of how hot it is in our house, last night it was 84 degrees, and this morning it's 83.

Swamp Cooler Blues

I love my house - don't get me wrong - but unfortunately, our swamp cooler is not working at the moment, and the timing could not be any better. :)

(Well, I suppose the swamp cooler could work, but that would mean flooding our downstairs neighbors again (sorry Ashley!).)

Just as the weather started to get hot, the swamp cooler decides to misbehave itself and send it's incoming water down our house and into the basement instead of using it like it's suppose to. It's actually an easy enough fix, but we just haven't gotten around to it. Why? I have no idea. We're sweating ourselves silly over here and all it would take is a little black tubing. We'll have to get around to it ASAP...which means it will be another week. :)

At least we have the air conditioner that sits in our bedroom window to keep cool at night!

5k Number Two!

Today I ran in my second 5k ever: the Break the Silence 5k Race Against Abuse & Pornography sponsored by the Women's Services and Resources Center on BYU campus. I ran the race with some of the girls from work (Jessica, Jenny, and Katie), and it was a lot of fun! My goal was to run this 5k faster than my previous, and I did it! I ran the breast cancer run in 29:30, and I ran this one in 28:51. That's a 40 second improvement! I'm glad that the girls at work convinced me to do it. We'll have to see if I do more 5ks this summer...

Longest Post Ever

I was going to title this post "Ode to Disneyland," but when I went through the pictures from our trip, I decided to change the title because I have tons of pictures that I want to post! As such, I think this may be my longest post ever.

This last week, Tyler, David, Denise, and I went to Disneyland for a fun summer vacation. We were able to go to Disneyland, California Adventure, Six Flags: Magic Mountain, and the beach all in four short days. Unfortunately I don't have pictures from Magic Mountain (Tyler had the camera with him, and he took it with him on the rides), but I have plenty from the rest of the trip to show. Here they are, in as best chronological order I could muster:

High speed? I beg to differ, but the ride sure is fun nonetheless!

Billy Hill and the Hillbillies in Frontierland. In this shot, they're playing their individual instruments, in addition to the instrument to their...left. Can you see it? Pretty cool!

Some of the recent additions to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride:
1) Captain Barbosa (spelled incorrectly, I know)
2) Captain Jack Sparrow
Mickey 2008 graduation cap for the recent graduate:

Tyler? Or Indian Jones?

Our boat died in the middle of our Jungle Cruise. No joke! This is the rescue boat that came to save us. Because the ride broke down while we were on it, we were given a FastPass to any ride we wanted! We used it (wisely) on Splash Mountain.

Tink.

Mickey.

Self-portrait with the hotel we stayed in.

I'm a chicken. I refused to go on this ride with Tyler and David. It's similar to Drop Zone, if any of you are familiar with that ride. It gives me the hebbie-gebbies just thinking about it...

...instead, I went on the "kiddie" version with Denise. If you're wondering, those are supposed to be jellyfish.

Entrance to the rafting ride. We can't remember the name of it right now. Oops, I think it says on the picture. :)

It's tough being a bug. (Still wet from the rafting ride.)

Self-explanatory, I would think. Good thing I'm looking at the camera.

At the beach! It was cold; we didn't go until about 7 in the evening.

Looking for shells.

I took this picture for my mom. She grew up in Huntington Beach, although I later found out that she lived rather north of where these pictures were taken.

Yay, all done!

:)
